April 2021

Pressure on the NHS may be reducing but supporting the mental health and wellbeing of health and social care staff is as important now as in the worst periods of the pandemic. Our April 2021 issue focuses on why it’s vital for them to have a safety net. We have repeated the survey we ran last year to launch our Covid-19: Are You OK? campaign, with 44% of respondents saying their mental health and wellbeing was “bad” or “very bad”, and 62% that it was worse than last spring. Meanwhile, the Royal College of Nursing’s new professional mental health lead has warned in his first Nursing Times interview that nurses need to see a future beyond Covid-19. On a positive note, England’s chief nursing officer has written about her new professional nurse advocate scheme to support staff recovery and we have spoken to a nurse helping lead a regional NHS staff mental health service.
