In our last issue of 2024, we thought it only fitting to interview our Nurse of the Year, Cathy Harrison, who is an advanced nurse practitioner at the Sheffield Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre. Passionate about haematology and bleeding disorders, she also wants to raise the profile of specialist nurses generally and their important role in treating long-term conditions.

On a similar theme, namely haematology, you can also find out in this month’s Nursing Times about how to interpret full blood count test results in the latest in our major series on assessment. While Cathy may be our Nurse of the Year, our role model this month is 63-year-old staff nurse Kate Minett, who works in the surgical unit at Benenden Hospital in Kent.

Also in this edition, you can read about nurse-led innovation on smoking and vaping cessation and catch up all on the headlines from our annual nursing workforce events, which took place last month. In addition, in our clinical practice section, there are key articles about non-pharmacological interventions in end-of-life care and the causes, types and symptoms of sarcopenia.
