This is the fourth year that we have dedicated a special issue of Nursing Times to equality, diversity and inclusion. In it you will find a broad range of articles covering topics including ending the culture of silence over misgendering, how discrimination increases cancer risks for transgender people, understanding intersectionality, and providing palliative care for people who are homeless.

In addition, we look at how nurses are supporting the mental health of military veterans and the challenges of being an overseas nurse in the UK. Also, a nurse originally from the Philippines describes her pride in representing internationally educated nurses at the annual Florence Nightingale memorial service last month.

Meanwhile, our cover feature is an interview with clinicians turned campaigners who are working to stamp out female genital mutilation. Former nurse Hoda Ali is urging the profession to routinely ask women whether they have undergone FGM. Through this simple step, she believes that awareness and education can be increased, meaning that future generations of girls and women can be prevented from undergoing the horrific practice of FGM.
