The nursing workforce puzzle has many pieces. To chime with the Nursing Times Workforce Summit and Awards, this edition of Nursing Times is dedicated to workforce issues, discussing some of the key challenges and developments while also sharing potential solutions. We analyse the latest in the battle for fair pay for nurses. We also explore the support available for overseas nurses joining the NHS and focus in on the challenges facing specialist nurses working in cancer services. In our opinion section, Ruth Oshikanlu discusses the value of agency nurses and Jessica Gilmour highlights the pressures on those working in community settings. Meanwhile, we begin a new clinical series on essential critical care skills, look at prehabilitation for improving lung cancer outcomes and include a guide to paediatric basic life support. Coinciding with the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, our role model for November is a procurement expert who wants a greener NHS.
