We are in the middle of a workforce crisis in health and social care, of that there is no doubt. This month’s Nursing Times is our annual workforce special and looks at both the challenges and what nursing is doing to try and overcome them. We have spoken to union leaders on why they think balloting for strike action on pay is part of the solution to the workforce challenge. We have also spoken to nurses with disabilities on whether enough is being done to retain them and looked in detail at whether virtual wards could help reduce pressure on staffing. In addition, our clinical section looks at tackling the escalating threat of staff burnout, helping newly registered nurses thrive in clinical practice and evaluating the experiences of nursing degree apprenticeships. Later this month, Nursing Times will be holding its fifth Workforce Summit, where some of those featured in this issue will come together with colleagues to discuss ways forward.
